We, Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW), Estyn (Her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales), Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW), and the Wales Audit Office (WAO) are the four main inspection, audit and review bodies in Wales.
We are four independent, strong sectoral inspectorates with professional authority in our own fields. CSSIW, Estyn, HIW and WAO have made a strategic agreement between our organisations setting out the commitment to work closely together to encourage improvement in public services.
The Travel Code has been in effect since January 2010. It is an integral part of the general behaviour policy of all schools and all learners must comply with it. There is responsibility on teachers, head teachers, local authorities and parents to promote awareness and understanding of the Code and to disseminate the message that following the Code could save lives.
The Department of education is making all 3,500 15min Teachers TV programmes and related content freely available on a non-exclusive basis.
Bog Standard is a campaign to promote better toilets for pupils.
Our 3 aims are:
This portal has been designed to give schools and local authorities easy access to a range of useful sites and information from a single point of contact.
The SEF is the overarching policy framework that seeks to transform educational standards and provision in Wales through the next decade and beyond. It is Wales’ key policy for education reform and the one to which all other education policies are aligned.
Aims and objectives
The Travel Code explains how children and young people should behave on the school or college journey. Learning and using these easy rules can make a big difference to everyone’s day. All children and young people between the ages of 5–19 are covered by the Travel Code, whether they walk, take the bus or train, bike or even travel by car.
Stick to the Travel Code.

From 12 October 2009, new measures are being introduced to help prevent unsuitable people undertaking paid or volunteer work with children or vulnerable adults.
It’s called the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) has been set up to help implement the Scheme and make decisions over who should be barred from working with vulnerable people. Those decisions are legally binding too. Failing to comply could result in both the employer and the employee or volunteer being prosecuted, or even going to prison.
From July 2010 all new employees, those moving jobs and volunteers who want to work with children or vulnerable adults can register with the ISA. From November 2010, they must be ISA-registered. From then on it will be illegal to employ new people who are not ISA-registered.
